Culturally Correct May Lead to Neglect (S-2012-0414-0971)

Sat August 11, 2012 8:00 AM
During this workshop, we examine the role of Ebonics as a rich and traditional means of communication that is often confused with mainstream English. Because of differences in syntax, grammar, inflection, kinesics, words and word meaning; however, we make the argument that specialized training is needed for teachers to facilitate learning of Standard English for Ebonics speakers. During this workshop, we help teachers to recognize the semantic and behavioral aspects of Ebonics, and teach ways to facilitate the learning of Standard English through modeling, scaffolding, visual learning, and role playing while respecting the integrity and importance of home language. (Dates: June 19: 8:00AM – 11:00AM; July 12: 8:00AM – 11:00AM)
